Things you need to know > Introduce Yourself!

Hello

(1/2) > >>

Neal:
I am a pipe smoker since 1967, starting at the early age of 14. I'm from a family of pipe smokers...my father, Grandfather and Great grandfather. I currently collect Italian artisan pipes and am on my continuing quest to replace my beloved Balkan Sorbranie which I haven't tasted for years.

Themayor:
Hello Neal-good to have you aboard . Are you native to the Capitol District? Where did you buy your pipes and tobacco in your early years? I too loved the original Balkan Sobranie and would love to have a repeat of it but the pretenders that come out fall short. If you are local- we would welcome you to our Pipe Club meetings the first Wednesday of the month @ the Habana Premium store on Central Ave in Colonie. There are a few of us old-time pipe smokers there and we discuss all sorts of pipe and tobacco lore as well as trying to solve the world's problems-hope to see you there !

Neal:
Thank you for the welcome. Sorry its taken a while to reply. I’m trying to figure out how to set this up so it lets me know there are messages to read. I am not a Capital District native. I grew up on Long Island and moved to Chatham in 1976. When I was a teenager I used to take a train into NYC with a friend to “hang out” at our favorite pipe shop. This would have been in the late 1960’s. I can’t remember it’s name. It was a few blocks from Penn Station. Half the store was devoted to pipes and tobacco and the other half to coffee and tea. I learned most of what I know about briar and tobacco from them. Each time I went they would give me a bowl full of a different straight blending tobacco so I could learn its distinct qualities. 1978-1980 I went to school in Albany and used to frequent The Smoker, at that time on upper Madison Ave.  By the late 70’s The Owl Shop in New Haven, CT became my tobacconist. I made frequent trips there through the 90s. I have many of their house label pipes. I bought my first Radice there in 1982 and began to discover Italian pipe makers. I always stop at L.J. Perretti in Boston when I am there and purchase several of their house blends regularly. I plan on attending the Christmas party on Sunday. I hope to meet you there. Unfortunately, my work schedule prevents me from making it to week night meetings.

adaires:
If you can make it to the Christmas dinner pot luck this Sunday (12/5) at 6PM at the Habana in Albany, you should come.  It's usually our highest attended meeting, so you'd get to meet everyone.
