Viprati Show
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:17:50 PM »
I saw some beautiful pipes on Wednesday -Viprati has talent BUT it got me to thinking -If I found a pipe that I absolutely had to have- what price limit would I stop at. Most of my pipes I got thru estate sales -many I actually worked out trades for -my most expensive trade/buy transaction was $700 and I agonized with guilt over that for a year. I like pipe smoking/collecting but I see now that I've pretty much set limits on what I'll spend. I guess I can still classify pipes as a hobby and not an obsession........what about the rest of you????

Just a note to let you all know that the pictures from the event are up...

click here to see them => http://www.capitaldistrictpipeclub.com/photos/2010-club-events/viprati-trunk-show/

Some of the pipes were absolutely breath-taking!

I've spent more on one of my pipes then I ever have on a pair of shoes... I just realized that and find it rather frightening!! To me it's less of a hobby, and more of an alternate method of smoking... and I consider them works of art as well. Does that make it a hobby?  *pipe1*

Mayor,
i understand exactly where your comming from with this.
i got another great viprati pipe and i love it.
but that being said....without the discount given to me that night i would not have layed out the cash.
i think the main reason is that once you get a good sized collection of the shapes you enjoy you are less tempted to spend the big bucks on a new pipe.
i too would rather buy an estate pipe crafted from the older woods of yesteryear than the newer ones that are not as aged.
some of the shapes i own now, when considering the grain and shape, by todays standards would be 500 dollar pipes!!
it really takes a special peice these days to speak to me loud enough to spend the big dollars for. *smokin*
