We’ll be discussing the upcoming International Pipe Smoking Day event on February 20th, as well as planning for the March meeting theme.

February 20th, 2010 is International Pipe Smoking Day, and we’re going to celebrate the event with a custom tobacco, and multi-media event at the Colonie Habana Premium Shoppe. The exclusive Habana Premium International Pipe Smoking Day 2010 blend is a mixture of Virginias, 5 different Orientals, Latakia and Perique for a complex and sophisticated medium Balkan blend.

Members of the Capital District Pipe Club are attending the event to represent our Club’s support of this day, and to facilitate a club membership drive (of sorts). Live registration to this forum will be available throughout the event, as well as a slideshow of our past participation in pipe related events and conventions.

The Capital District Pipe Club is going on another road trip, this time to Peekskill NY to visit S.M. Frank & Co. the manufacturers of the Kaywoodie, Yello-Bole and Medico brand lines of smoking pipes and accessories.

On Saturday January 23rd, we’re meeting at the old Colonie store parking lot at 9:45am. We will carpool from there on a two hour drive. We’ll arrive in Peekskill just in time to have lunch at the factory before our tour. We’re looking forward to pipe making demonstrations, and learning more about the history of the Kaywoodie pipe.

Larry Loerzel received the “Pipe Man of the Year” award. The plaque presented by Scott was a very nice touch, and really set the mood for the party. Plans for 2010

The start of the New Year brings with it some exciting plans for the Pipe Club. International Pipe Smoking Day is just around the corner, and we’ll be making plans for the celebration of the pipe smoking hobby at our January meeting so don’t miss it! (See the calendar on the forum for more details.)

We’re going on a road trip to the Kaywoodie Factory in late January! A tour of the facility, and lunch with the Kaywoodie crowd should make for a fun and interesting Saturday afternoon. Learn more at the January meeting, or visit the forum!

Just a reminder that this year’s holiday dinner is being held at the New Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe located at 1645 Central Ave (formerly Tri-City Luggage). We’ll be gathering for a pot luck dinner at 6:30pm, with everyone bringing something to surprise us with to add to the buffet table.

Pipe of the Year Pick Up

If you ordered a pipe of the year, hand carved by Tinsky… they’re here! Be prepared to pick up your Capital District Pipe Club pipe. Call Russ O. with any questions regarding picking up your pipe 518-690-2222.

Russ Ouellette, our in-house tobacconist was on hand, with three new tobacco blends to sample. “Steamroller” was the overall most popular with a mix of yellow Virginias, Perique, and Burleys. There was a pleasant blend of pipe smoke throughout the store as people strolled around the tables taking in all that was on display.

Our webmaster was on hand, posting pictures to Twitter as the event was going on. While there, we were able to register a few new members to the Pipe Club and registered them to our forum on the spot. The dinner on Friday night was great, and it let me spend some time with Rick Newcombe, author of one of my favorite pipe books- “In Search of Pipe Dreams”. If you haven’t read this book, buy it. It is a great personal reminiscence of someone who loves the hobby. I also had a nice chat with Vernon Vig,  president of both the New York Pipe Club and the United Pipe Clubs of America,  who unselfishly devotes a large amount of his time to the pipe smoking community. I am on the executive board of UPCA this year, and look forward to more involvement with this wonderful organization which encourages pipe smokers to join or form a local club.
