On this day we will take a breather and celebrate the noble art of pipe-smoking and the noble spirit which pervades the brother/sisterhood of the briar. We will put into practice the time-honored and ancestral traditions of raising our pipes in toast to each other in the evening in unison and, thus, share a bowl together.
As the members of the Capital District Pipe club discuss today’s event in our forum, we’re reminded of the purpose behind the event by the IPSD website. In our forum, our members plan on meeting at both of the Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe locations to “raise their pipes in toast to each other”.
Scott Bendett, owner of Habana Premium adds to the forum discussion, “This isn’t just an event. It is a party. At both stores we’ll have Pizza and refreshments. Hope to see you at one of the stores!”
One can only imagine that the pipe enthusiasts planning on attending the event have already picked out their favorite smokers, and packed them, along with their tobacco blend of choice into their travel bags. We expect to see pipe smokers of all ages at both stores, and will have live registration to our forums available in N. Greenbush. Pictures will be uploaded the the site during the event, to keep our members that can’t attend as involved as possible.
Even the Wall Street Journal has recognized the rising popularity of pipe smoking among today’s younger set;
“They’re eager to learn,” says 71-year-old Vernon E. Vig, president of the New York Pipe Club and the United Pipe Clubs of America. Mr. Vig started smoking a pipe as an undergrad at Carleton College 53 years ago. “Back then, everyone smoked a pipe,” Mr. Vig says. His group, which meets monthly in Manhattan, has seen a definite increase in college students and young professionals, he says.
No one tracks how many young men and women are pipe smokers. But sales of pipe tobacco are rising again after years of decline, and many think young smokers are the reason. U.S. sales of pipe tobacco plummeted to 4.9 million pounds in 2006, from 52 million pounds in 1970, says Norman Sharp, president of the Cigar Association of America. Sales climbed to 5.3 million pounds in 2008. Pipe tobacco and smokeless tobacco sales are on the rise, offsetting over a decade of decreases in cigarette sales.
Pipe-smoking groups on social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace have attracted thousands of members. Questions in the forums include: A bent or straight pipe? Does anyone have a favorite perique Louisiana tobacco blend? What is the consensus on corncob pipes?
It’s nice to see the enthusiasm all over the world about pipe smoking. I’ve listed some of the International Pipe smoking videos that are on YouTube below, and remind you that there is a 30% discount at both of our stores today on all pipes and pipe accessories. Hope to see you there!
Don’t forget to visit our forums to discuss your IPSD celebrations, or comment on them right here, we’d love to hear from our fellow pipe smokers!
